Add and manage navigation links in Squarespace
Learn how to add external links, email addresses, files, and more to your Squarespace navigation - plus how to organise them properly.
Quick summary
- Add links through the Pages panel using the '+' button
- Link to external sites, emails, phone numbers, and files
- Use dropdowns to keep your navigation tidy
- Always test your links after adding them
- Remove links by clicking the bin icon in the Pages panel
Adding different types of links
External and internal links
Open the Pages panel (on desktop or mobile app) and click the '+' icon where you want to add your link. Select 'Link' and you'll see a link editor.
Type your link name in the 'Link Title' box, then paste in your URL. This works for external websites or internal pages on your site.
Important: Always paste the complete URL including 'https://' for external links. Just pasting 'google.com' won't work properly.
Email links
After clicking 'Link', choose the 'Email' option. Enter the email address you want people to contact.
You can also:
- Add CC and BCC addresses
- Pre-fill the subject line
- Add default body text
When visitors click this link, it opens their email app with everything already filled in.
Phone number links
Select 'Phone' and enter the number. Drop the leading zero and include the country code (like +44 for UK numbers).
You can set the link to either start a phone call or open a text message.
File links
Perfect for sharing PDFs, audio files, or documents. Choose 'File' in the link editor, then either upload a new file or pick from recently uploaded ones.
Tick 'Open link in new tab' if you want the file to open in a separate window (usually better for PDFs).
Organising with dropdowns
To add a link to an existing dropdown, create the link first, then drag it into the dropdown section in your Pages panel.
You can also create a new page inside a dropdown specifically to hold your link.
Editing and removing links
To delete a link, hover over it in the Pages panel and click the bin icon. Confirm the deletion and it's gone.
To edit a link, click on it in the Pages panel and update the details in the link editor.
Testing your links
Always check your links work properly after adding them. Broken or misdirected links frustrate visitors and make your site look unprofessional.
Preview your site and click each new link to make sure it goes where it should.
Common questions
Can I link to external websites in my navigation?
Yes, just select 'Link' and paste in the full URL including 'https://'.
How do I add an email contact link?
Use the 'Email' option in the link editor and enter the email address.
Can I link to downloadable files?
Absolutely. Use the 'File' option to upload and link to PDFs, audio files, or other documents.
Quick definitions
Dropdown - A navigation menu that shows additional links when you hover over or click it
Anchor links - Links that jump to specific sections within the same page
Not linked section - An area in your Pages panel for pages that don't appear in your main navigation menu
Wrapping up
Good navigation makes your site easier to use. Take time to organise your links logically and test them regularly to make sure they still work. Your visitors will thank you for it.
