Squarespace Payments Settings Guide
Update Your Business and Payment Details
Your payment settings affect what customers see when they buy from you, and what you see when money hits your account. Getting these right makes everything clearer for everyone.
Edit Your Business Details
- Go to Settings in your Squarespace dashboard
- Click "Squarespace Payments" then "Manage Settings"
- Click the pencil icon next to any section you want to change
- Make your changes and click "Submit"
Set Your Payout Description
This is what shows up on your bank statements when Squarespace pays you. Keep it recognisable so you know what each payment is for.
- In Settings, go to Squarespace Payments > "Manage Settings"
- Find "Payout Descriptor" and type what you want (22 characters max)
- Save your changes
Customise Customer Billing Statements
This appears on your customers' bank statements. Make it clear so they remember what they bought from you (and don't dispute the charge).
- In the same management settings, find "Customer Billing Statement"
- Enter text that clearly identifies your business (22 characters max)
- Click "Save"
Choose Which Payment Methods to Accept
You don't have to accept every payment method Squarespace offers. Turn off anything that doesn't make sense for your business.
- Go to Settings > Squarespace Payments > "Manage Settings"
- Click the "Payment methods" tab
- Toggle each payment type on or off
Use Test Mode for Safe Testing
Test mode lets you run fake orders without processing real payments. Perfect for checking everything works before you go live, or testing changes to your shop.
Turn Test Mode On or Off
- Go to Settings
- Find "Test mode" and toggle it on or off
Important: Don't forget to turn test mode off when you're ready to take real orders. I've seen people wonder why no money is coming in, only to find test mode was still on.
Quick Tips
- Review your payment settings every few months, especially if you change banks or business details
- Test a purchase yourself after making changes to make sure everything works
- Keep your payout descriptor simple and recognisable
Common Questions
How often can I change my business details?
As often as you need to. There's no limit, but give yourself time to test after making changes.
Can I accept different payment methods for different products?
No, your payment method settings apply to your entire site. You can't pick and choose per product.
What happens if I forget to turn off test mode?
You won't process any real payments. Customers will see successful purchase confirmations, but no money changes hands.
