Hide Blog Metadata in Squarespace: Clean Up Your Posts
Learn how to hide author names, dates, and other metadata from your Squarespace blog posts for a cleaner, more professional look.
Why Hide Blog Metadata?
Sometimes less is more. If you're a solo blogger, showing "By [Your Name]" on every post feels redundant. Publication dates can make evergreen content look outdated. Categories and tags might clutter your design without adding value for readers.
Here's how to hide these elements and create a cleaner blog layout.
Hide Author Names
For most templates:
- Go to Pages and click on your blog page
- Click Edit, then hover over your blog section and click the pencil icon
- Under blog settings, find Primary Meta Data and Secondary Meta Data
- Untick Author in both sections
- Save your changes
For Aviator and Montauk templates:
These have a simpler option. Go to Design > Site Styles, find your blog settings, and toggle off "Hide Author."
Hide Publication Dates
Follow the same steps as above, but untick Date instead of Author in your metadata settings.
This works particularly well for:
- Tutorial content that stays relevant
- Company blogs where dates aren't important
- Portfolio showcases
- Resource pages
Note: Brine and Farro templates have dedicated options for hiding dates in their blog metadata settings.
Use Summary Blocks for Better Control
If your template doesn't give you enough control, try this approach:
- Create a new page for your blog
- Add a Summary Block and connect it to your blog
- In the Display tab, set both Primary and Secondary Metadata to hide what you don't want
- Use this as your main blog page
This method gives you more flexibility than relying on template settings alone.
Hide Categories and Tags
- Edit your blog page settings
- Find the metadata options
- Untick Categories or Tags
- Save changes
Important: Not all templates support hiding categories and tags. Some (like Skye) will show them on individual posts regardless of your settings.
Template Differences Matter
Squarespace 7.1 generally offers more control over metadata than older templates. If you're using a 7.0 template, your options might be more limited.
Before making changes, check what your specific template supports by looking through Design > Site Styles > Blog settings.
Quick Answers
Can I hide author names completely?
You can hide them from displaying to visitors, but Squarespace still tracks authorship in the backend.
Do all templates support hiding metadata?
No. Newer templates typically offer more control than older ones.
Will hiding dates affect SEO?
Search engines can still see publication dates in your site's code, so your SEO won't suffer.
What These Terms Mean
Metadata: Extra information about your posts (author, date, categories) that appears alongside your content.
Summary Block: A Squarespace tool that pulls content from one area of your site to display elsewhere.
Template: The design framework your site uses. Different templates offer different customisation options.
Getting the Balance Right
Hiding metadata can clean up your design, but consider what your readers actually need. A news blog benefits from showing dates. A personal blog might not need author names. A business blog might want to hide both.
Test different combinations and see what works best for your content and audience. You can always change these settings later if your needs evolve.
