How to Set Up Customer Reviews in Squarespace

Customer reviews are one of the most effective ways to build trust and increase sales in your Squarespace store. Here's how to set them up properly and get the most out of them.

Getting Started with Customer Reviews

Customer reviews are available on Business, Basic Commerce, and Commerce Advanced plans. If you're on a Personal plan, you'll need to upgrade first.

Setting Up Automated Review Requests

Squarespace handles the heavy lifting by automatically sending review request emails 14 days after an order is fulfilled. Customers get 120 days to respond, and they can write up to 1500 characters.
Here's how to set it up:
  1. Go to your Automations Dashboard
  1. Select 'Request customer reviews'
  1. Customise your email content and add your branding
  1. Send yourself a test email to check how it looks
  1. Click 'Activate' to start sending requests
The system will automatically send requests for future orders, plus any orders fulfilled up to 14 days before you activated the feature.
Pro tip: Don't use the default email template. Customise it to match your brand voice. A personal touch significantly improves response rates.

Managing Your Reviews

Once reviews start coming in, you can control how they appear on your site.

Display Options

In the Customer Reviews panel, you can:
  • Turn on email notifications for new reviews
  • Choose whether to show all store reviews or just product-specific ones
  • Import existing Etsy reviews if you migrated from that platform
Reviews appear at the bottom of product pages by default. You can display either reviews for that specific product or all store reviews together.

Controlling Visibility

You can hide individual reviews if needed:
  1. Go to the Customer Reviews panel
  1. Find the review you want to hide
  1. Use the Visibility dropdown to set it to 'Hidden'
  1. Confirm your choice
This is useful for reviews that might be off-topic or unhelpful, though you can't respond to reviews directly within Squarespace.

Common Questions About Squarespace Reviews

Can I request reviews for old orders? Only orders from the last 14 days before you enabled reviews will get automatic requests. You can't batch-send requests for older orders.
What happens if I downgrade my plan? Existing reviews stay visible, but you lose the ability to send new review requests if you drop to Personal or Business plans.
Can customers change their reviews? No. Once submitted, reviews are permanent. Customers can't edit or delete them.
Why can't some customers leave reviews? Usually because the 120-day window expired, the product is no longer available, or they're trying to review a subscription renewal (which doesn't trigger review requests).

Important Limitations

There are a few things Squarespace reviews can't do:
  • No review requests for gift cards
  • No general business reviews (only product reviews)
  • You can't respond to reviews within Squarespace
  • Customers can't edit reviews once submitted

Making Reviews Work for You

Customer reviews work best when you:
  • Customise your request emails to sound like your brand
  • Follow up personally with customers when possible
  • Monitor reviews regularly and hide any that are genuinely unhelpful
  • Consider the timing of your review requests
Reviews provide social proof that can significantly impact buying decisions. Set them up properly from the start, and they'll work quietly in the background to build trust with potential customers.
Remember to check your review settings periodically, especially if you change products or adjust your store setup. A well-maintained review system becomes a powerful sales tool that works around the clock.
