TL;DR: Key Points

  • Check your domain works with Squarespace before you start
  • Add your domain through Squarespace's Domains panel
  • Set up DNS records (CNAME and A records) in your OVHcloud account
  • Double-check all records are correct to avoid problems
  • Connection takes 24-48 hours to work
  • Use Squarespace's DNS checker if it's not working after 48 hours

Before You Start

Check if your domain meets Squarespace's requirements for third-party domains. If it does, you might want to transfer it directly to Squarespace instead - it makes managing everything much easier. OVHcloud has a transfer guide if you decide to go that route.

Step 1: Add Your Domain in Squarespace

Go to the 'Domains' panel in your Squarespace account. Click 'Use a domain I own' and enter your domain name. Choose 'Other' from the dropdown and click 'Connect domain'.

Step 2: Access Your OVHcloud DNS Settings

Log into your OVHcloud account and go to 'Web Cloud', then 'Domains'. Find your domain and click on 'DNS zone'. This is where you'll add the records Squarespace gives you.

Step 3: Add the Verification CNAME Record

In Squarespace's DNS settings, you'll see a unique code under the 'Host' column that needs to point to verify.squarespace.com. Copy this code and add it as a CNAME record in OVHcloud:
  • Host: The unique code from Squarespace
  • Target: verify.squarespace.com.
Make sure you add the dot (.) at the end of the target URL.

Step 4: Add the WWW CNAME Record

Add another CNAME record:
  • Host: www
  • Target: ext-cust.squarespace.com.
Again, don't forget the dot at the end.

Step 5: Add the A Records

Squarespace will give you four IP addresses. Add each one as an A record in OVHcloud without any subdomain (leave the host field blank or use @). Keep the TTL settings as default.

Wait for It to Connect

Once you've added all the DNS records, your domain should connect within 24-48 hours. You can check progress in Squarespace's DNS settings - you'll see a green label when it's working.
Pixelhaze Tip: Double-check every DNS entry. Most connection problems happen because of typos in the DNS setup.

FAQs

What if my domain isn't linking after 48 hours? Use Squarespace's DNS checker tool to make sure all your records are set up correctly, especially the CNAME and A records.
Can I link multiple OVHcloud domains to one Squarespace site? Yes, just repeat the same process for each domain.
Should I disconnect my domain from its previous provider before linking to Squarespace? Yes, disconnect it from any other services first to avoid conflicts.

Jargon Buster

  • DNS: The system that converts website names (like google.com) into IP addresses that computers understand
  • CNAME Record: Points one domain name to another domain name
  • A Record: Points a domain name to an IP address where your website lives
  • TTL (Time to Live): How long DNS information gets stored before it refreshes

Final Thoughts

Connecting your OVHcloud domain to Squarespace looks complicated at first, but it's straightforward once you know the steps. Take your time with the DNS records and double-check everything before saving. The connection can take up to two days, so don't panic if it doesn't work immediately.
Once it's connected, your Squarespace site will look much more professional with your own domain. If you run into problems, Squarespace's support team and troubleshooting tools are there to help.
