Search Blocks in Squarespace: A Complete Setup Guide

Search blocks in Squarespace help visitors find what they're looking for quickly. You can set them up to search your entire site or focus on specific sections like your blog or events. Here's how to get them working properly.

Adding a Search Block

First, edit any page and click the add block button (the plus icon). Find the Search block in the menu and add it where you want it to appear.
Once added, you'll see two tabs in the block settings: Content and Display.

Content Settings

In the Content tab, you can choose what the search block actually searches:
  • Entire site: Leave "Search Specific Page" unchecked to search everything
  • Specific collection: Check "Search Specific Page" and pick from your blog, events, or other collection pages
Pro tip: If you're searching a specific collection, add a text block above your search that says something like "Search our blog posts" or "Find an event". Otherwise visitors won't know what they're actually searching.

Display Settings

The Display tab controls how your search block looks and behaves:
Quick Preview shows results as people type. It's turned on by default and works well for most sites. If you turn it off, visitors need to press Enter to see results.
Theme lets you pick Light or Dark styling. Choose the opposite of your background colour (dark theme on light backgrounds, light theme on dark backgrounds) so people can actually see what they're typing.

How Visitors Use Search Blocks

When someone types in your search field:
  • With quick preview on: Results appear in a dropdown as they type
  • With quick preview off: They press Enter to go to a full results page
The results page shows content snippets and images to help visitors find what they want.

Common Problems and Fixes

Can't see text while typing? Switch your search block theme. If you're using Dark theme, try Light (or the other way around). The text colour needs to contrast with your background.
No search results appearing? Try these fixes:
  • Clear your browser cache
  • Turn off browser extensions temporarily
  • Remove password protection from pages that have search blocks
  • Check your content actually contains the words people are searching for
If none of that works, contact Squarespace support.
Want search in your header? You can't add search blocks directly to most headers, but some templates let you add them to header areas. Check your template's options, or add the search block to the top of individual pages instead.

Getting Better Search Results

Your search results are only as good as your content. Use clear, descriptive titles for your pages and posts. Include the words people are likely to search for in your actual content, not just hidden in SEO fields.
For blog-specific searches, make sure your post titles and content use the language your readers actually use, not just industry jargon.
Search blocks work well when you set them up thoughtfully. Take a few minutes to test your search with terms your visitors might actually use, and adjust your content accordingly.
