Transfer a Domain Between Squarespace Sites
Learn how to move a third-party domain between Squarespace sites without breaking your website.
What you'll learn:
- Disconnect the domain from your current Squarespace site
- Reconnect the domain to the new Squarespace site
- Update the CNAME record if using a manual connection process
- Movement completion can take 24-48 hours
- Contact Squarespace to transfer Google Workspace subscriptions
- Troubleshooting tips are available for connection issues
Why you might need to do this
You've got a domain connected to one Squarespace site, but you want to use it on a different Squarespace site instead. Maybe you've built a new site and want to swap them over, or you're consolidating multiple sites. Whatever the reason, the process is straightforward once you know the steps.
Step-by-step domain transfer process
Step 1: Disconnect your domain
Start with the Squarespace site that currently has your domain connected to it.
- Go to Settings > Domains
- Find the domain you want to move
- Click Disconnect domain
- Confirm the action
Your domain will now show as disconnected from this site.
Step 2: Connect your domain to the new site
Now switch to the Squarespace site where you want to use the domain.
- Go to Settings > Domains
- Click Use a Domain I Own
- Enter your domain name
- Click Connect from provider
- Select your domain provider from the list (or choose Other if it's not listed)
- Follow the connection instructions
Squarespace will either connect automatically or give you manual DNS settings to update.
Step 3: Update the CNAME record (if needed)
You only need this step if your domain provider requires manual DNS updates.
- Log into your domain provider's control panel
- Find the DNS settings for your domain
- Look for the existing CNAME record (usually pointing to something like
ext-cust.squarespace.com
)
- Replace it with the new CNAME record that Squarespace provided
- Save the changes
Pixelhaze tip: Before connecting your domain to the new site, double-check it's definitely disconnected from the old one. Having a domain connected to two sites at once will cause connection conflicts.
What about Google Workspace?
If you've got Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Docs, etc.) set up through Squarespace, you'll need to move that separately.
- Complete the domain transfer first
- Contact Squarespace support to transfer your Google Workspace subscription
- They'll move it to the new site for you
Don't try to set up a new Google Workspace subscription on the new site before doing this, or you'll end up with duplicate accounts.
How long does it take?
The domain connection should be complete within 24-48 hours. In my experience, it's usually much faster (often within a few hours), but DNS changes can sometimes take longer to propagate globally.
Troubleshooting common issues
Domain won't disconnect: Make sure you're logged into the correct Squarespace account and looking at the right site.
Connection fails on new site: Check that the domain is properly disconnected from the old site first. Also verify you're entering the domain name exactly as it appears (with or without www).
CNAME update isn't working: Some DNS providers cache records for longer than others. Try clearing your browser cache and checking again in a few hours.
Site goes offline during transfer: This can happen briefly during DNS propagation. Your site should come back online once the new connection is established.
Quick definitions
CNAME: A DNS record that points your domain to another address. Think of it as a forwarding address for your domain.
DNS Connect: Manual setup method where you update DNS records yourself instead of letting Squarespace do it automatically.
Google Workspace: Google's business tools (Gmail, Drive, Docs) that you can use with your custom domain.
Domain Provider: The company where you registered your domain (like Namecheap, GoDaddy, or 123-reg).
Moving a domain between Squarespace sites is pretty straightforward once you've done it a few times. The key is doing the steps in order and being patient with DNS propagation. If you run into any snags, Squarespace support can usually sort things out quickly.
