Using the Squarespace Pages Panel

Learn how to use the Squarespace Pages panel to build and organise your website structure effectively.
TL;DR:
  • The Pages panel is where you add, move and organise all your website pages
  • You can create dropdown menus and customise navigation styles
  • Deleted pages can be restored within 30 days
  • Use "Not Linked" for pages you don't want in your main menu

What is the Pages Panel?

The Pages panel is your control centre for managing your website structure. Think of it as your filing cabinet where you organise everything your visitors will see (and some things they won't).
The panel has several key sections:
  • Main Navigation - Pages that appear in your main menu
  • Not Linked - Pages that exist but aren't in your menu (useful for thank you pages or work-in-progress content)
  • Deleted Pages - Your safety net for recently deleted pages

How to Use the Pages Panel

On Desktop

You'll find the Pages panel on the left side of your screen. Click the + icon to add new pages, or drag pages up and down to reorder them. There's also a search icon if you have lots of pages to sift through.

On the Squarespace App

Tap the + icon to add pages, or hold and drag to move them around. Tap the three dots (...) for page settings, or swipe left on any page to delete it.

Creating Your Site Structure

Before you start clicking around, sketch out your website structure on paper first. This saves you time later and helps you think through how visitors will move around your site.
Your main navigation should include your most important pages. Everything else can live in "Not Linked" until you decide where it belongs.

Setting Up Dropdown Menus

To create a dropdown menu, simply drag a page underneath another page in your main navigation. The indented page becomes a sub-page in the dropdown.
You can nest pages several levels deep, but keep it simple. Most visitors won't dig through complex menu structures.

Customising Your Navigation Style

Go to Design > Site Styles to change how your navigation looks. You can adjust fonts, colours, spacing and hover effects to match your brand.
Don't go overboard with styling. Your navigation should help people find things, not distract them.

Working with Not Linked Pages

The "Not Linked" section is perfect for:
  • Thank you pages after form submissions
  • Landing pages for specific campaigns
  • Pages you're still building
  • Content you want to share directly but not advertise
You can still password-protect these pages through their individual settings if needed.

Restoring Deleted Pages

Accidentally deleted something? Check the "Deleted Pages" section at the bottom of the panel. You have 30 days to restore anything before it's gone forever.
To restore a page, just drag it back to where you want it. To permanently delete everything, use the "Empty Trash" option.

Advanced Options

Member Areas

If you've enabled member areas, you'll see options to create member-only pages. These only appear for logged-in members.

Marketing Tools

You can add announcement bars and promotional pop-ups through the Pages panel. These overlay your existing content rather than creating new pages.

Custom Code

For advanced users, you can inject custom CSS or HTML through individual page settings or site-wide headers.

Common Questions

Can I change the order of pages in my navigation? Yes, just drag them up or down in the Pages panel. The order here matches what visitors see.
How do I hide a page temporarily? Move it to "Not Linked" rather than deleting it. You can always move it back later.
Can I have the same page appear in multiple places? No, but you can create multiple pages with the same content, or use summary blocks to pull content from other pages.
What happens if I delete a page that's linked elsewhere? Those links will break. Check your navigation, buttons and text links before permanently deleting anything.

Quick Reference

  • Pages Panel - Where you manage your site structure
  • Main Navigation - Your primary menu that appears on every page
  • Not Linked - Pages that exist but aren't in your main menu
  • Dropdown Menu - Sub-pages that appear when you hover over or click a main menu item

Getting It Right

The Pages panel might seem basic, but getting your site structure right makes everything else easier. Spend time planning your navigation before you build it, and remember that simpler is usually better.
Your visitors should never feel lost or confused about where to find things. If you need more than two levels of dropdown menus, you probably need to rethink your structure.
Start with the essentials in your main navigation, then add complexity only when you need it. You can always reorganise later as your site grows.
