Introduction

This chapter covers your first complete project in Canva: building a presentation from scratch. You'll learn the essential skills needed to create professional-looking slides, from picking the right template to adding finishing touches. By the end, you'll have a working presentation and the confidence to tackle more complex design projects.

Lessons

Getting Started in Canva

First, you need to access Canva and find the right starting point for your presentation.

Step 1: Go to www.canva.com and log into your account (or create one if you haven't already).

Step 2: Click the "Create a design" button in the top right corner.

Step 3: Type "Presentation" in the search box or select it from the suggested formats.

Step 4: Browse the template library and click on a design that matches your topic or style preference.

The template you choose becomes your foundation. Don't worry about getting it perfect—you can change almost everything later. Focus on finding something with the right general layout and colour scheme.

Customising Your Template

Now you'll make the template your own by adding your content and adjusting the design elements.

Step 1: Click on any text box to edit the content. Replace the placeholder text with your own words.

Step 2: To change fonts, highlight the text and use the font dropdown menu in the toolbar.

Step 3: For images, click on the placeholder image and select "Replace image" from the options that appear.

Step 4: Upload your own images by clicking "Uploads" in the left sidebar, then drag your files into the upload area.

Step 5: To add new slides, click the "+" button at the bottom of the screen and choose from the available layouts.

Remember to keep your text clear and readable. Avoid cramming too much information onto each slide—your audience needs to be able to read it easily.

Adding Visual Elements

Visual elements help make your presentation more engaging and professional-looking.

Step 1: Click "Elements" in the left sidebar to access graphics, shapes, and icons.

Step 2: Use the search bar to find specific elements (like "arrow" or "chart").

Step 3: Click on any element to add it to your slide, then drag it to position it where you want.

Step 4: Resize elements by dragging the corner handles, and rotate them using the curved arrow that appears when selected.

Step 5: Change colours by selecting an element and clicking on the colour squares in the toolbar.

This is where you can really make your presentation stand out. But don't go overboard—too many different elements can make your slides look cluttered.

Applying Animations

Animations can add movement and interest to your presentation when used thoughtfully.

Step 1: Select the text or element you want to animate.

Step 2: Click "Animate" in the top toolbar.

Step 3: Choose from the available animation options—"Fade" and "Pan" work well for most presentations.

Step 4: Click the play button to preview how the animation looks.

Step 5: Apply the same animation to similar elements throughout your presentation for consistency.

Keep animations simple and purposeful. They should enhance your content, not distract from it.

Finalising and Sharing

Once your presentation is complete, you need to download it or share it with others.

Step 1: Click "Share" in the top right corner.

Step 2: Choose "Download" to save a copy to your computer, or "Present" to show it directly from Canva.

Step 3: For downloads, select PDF for general use or PNG if you need individual slide images.

Step 4: To share with collaborators, click "Share" and enter their email addresses or copy the share link.

Your presentation is now ready to use. You can always come back and make changes later if needed.

Practice

Create a simple 4-slide presentation about your local area or a hobby you enjoy. Include:

  • A title slide with your name
  • Two content slides with text and images
  • A conclusion slide

Use at least one animation and experiment with different fonts and colours. When you're finished, download it as a PDF and review how it looks.

FAQs

Can I use Canva presentations offline?
You need an internet connection to create and edit in Canva, but you can download your finished presentation to present offline.

How do I maintain consistency across slides?
Use the same fonts, colours, and layout style throughout. Canva's templates help with this by providing matching slide designs.

What's the best format for downloading presentations?
PDF works well for most situations. Use PNG if you need individual slide images, or choose PDF Print for the highest quality.

Can others edit my presentation?
Only if you share it with edit permissions. You can also share view-only links or download and send the file directly.

How many slides should my presentation have?
This depends on your content and time limit. Generally, plan for about one slide per minute of presentation time.
